Cancer Screening

Cancer screenings help to find cancer while it’s in its earliest stages when the chances for treating it successfully are at their greatest. They are medical tests that are done when you are healthy and not showing signs of illness.

Cancer screenings will vary and depend on your gender and your age. The recommended cancer screenings are typically done for the following conditions:

Cancer screenings should be done regularly. Talk with Dr. Crescenzo about your risk factors including what tests you might need and a screening schedule that fits your lifestyle and family history. Even if you don’t have symptoms, a cancer screening can find cancer or catch changes that may or may not be cancer.

Cancer Prevention

We can’t always prevent cancer but by keeping your body in good health you can lower your chances of developing cancer.

Some of the steps to lower your risk of developing cancer include:

  • Not using tobacco to smoke or chew
  • Making sure your diet is low in fat and includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and beans
  • Not drinking alcohol or drinking in moderation. Alcohol increases the chance of developing mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colorectal, and breast cancer
  • Limiting your exposure to the sun and using a broad-spectrum sunscreen when you are outside. Making sure that your skin is covered by wearing a hat and sunglasses.
  • Avoiding tanning salons
  • Maintaining a healthy weight and getting regular exercise
  • Knowing your family’s health history
  • Getting screened on a regular basis

Next-generation Sequencing

Genetic testing of patients and their specific cancer types has become a standard practice in medical oncology. With next-generation sequencing, Dr. Crescenzo is able to customize cancer therapy, based on the disease-associated genomic variants, when standard therapy has failed leading to precision management of cancers.
